Titleist Golf Ball Fitting with Mike
GibsonWhether superstitious or just set in their ways,
golfers of all skill levels like having their
equipment tailored to their games and
preferences.
Avid players get their clubs custom-fitted.
They purchase and wear golf apparel that fits
their body styles best. Their shoes are made
to fit their feet, swing --- and match their
apparel.
Greenside
control is a focus point in the fitting
process
|
But what about their golf ball? Are golfers
taking the same care when picking out their
golf ball as they do when thinking about what
clubs to play or apparel and shoes to wear?
Fortunately, this becomes an easy process
thanks to
Titleist's Golf Ball Fitting.
Amateurgolf.com recently caught up with Mike
Gibson, Manager of Golf Ball Fitting at Titleist
and he broke down the process for fitting
players with the right ball for their games.
The Pro
V1 and Pro V1x are made for all swing speeds
and compressions |
First, they boil Titleist's selection down to two
types of golf balls based on whether the player
needs urethane or surlyn materials.
The next step is the on-course evaluation.
Titleist's golf-ball fitting process has the player
start on the green before backing up to the
fringe, the rough, in a bunker and over a
bunker. The goal is to get a feel for each ball
and determine which one gives you better
green-side control.
"The closer you get the ball to the hole, the
more putts you're going to make," Gibson said.
"So, getting close is really important."
The golf-ball fitting process then backs the
player up even more with the goal of finding
the right ball for your full swing, flight and
trajectory.
"Once you choose your golf ball," Gibson said.
"Stick with that one golf ball. The one ball that
is going to lower your score."
In the above interview, Gibson also addresses
the misnomer that Titleist's Pro V1 and Pro V1x
models are designed only for golfers with high
swing speeds.
"We all have different swing speeds within our
own bag," he said. "My driver swing speed and
8-iron swing speed are very different. We have
players on the PGA Tour, the LPGA Tour and
myself that all play the same ball, so that's a
misnomer.
"The ball doesn't know who's hitting it."
