Scratch flight winners shoot new tourney record

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (March 11, 2008)-- Keith Holmes and Rocky Costa of Georgia grabbed a share of the first-round lead at the amateurgolf.com Kiawah Island Two-Man courtesy of their 64 at the Osprey Point Golf Club and never looked back, eventually finishing with a tournament-record 54-hole score of 15-under-par 202, good for a 15-stroke victory.

"We brother-in-lawed it really well today," said Holmes after their finishing round 71 at the Ocean Course, ranked by Golf Digest as the toughest track in the country.

The Mississippi tandem of Jud Grace and Stan Hall briefly cut the pair's lead to three strokes after a birdie on the first hole of the last round, but eventually fell victim to the Dye-abolical course, and finished in third place at 218.

Greg Wardle and Gary Young of California took second at 217.

"Not only are they long, but they didn't miss any fairways all day," said Jeff Corken, one of the winning team's Day 2 playing partners. "And they also converted a few 30-foot putts."

In the net flight Gary Meadors and Roy Paxson of Jacksonville Beach showed why winter weather has little effect on golfers from Florida. They carded an opening-round 59, then held the rest of the field at arm's length to finish with a seven-stroke victory at 22-under 195. Sandy Burgess and Chris Wilson played solid golf througout, finishing in second at 202, but could never go quite low enough to catch the frontrunners.

Texans Michael Pierce and Roger Wagner may have been frustrated after carding a team double-bogey at the brutally tough par-3 17th at the Ocean Course (the same hole ate up Mark Calcevecchia in the '91 Ryder Cup), but it still wasn't enough to unseat them from their perch atop the senior leaderboard.

The team finished at 7-under 210 to win the tournament by two strokes over Sherman Haggerty and Ben Whipple, who joined them in shooting a 69 in Rd. 3.
