Coward overtakes Kelly to win U.S. Super Senior Championship
Mark Coward
Mark Coward

The race was on at the Golfweek Super Senior National Champion on Sunday, and Mark Coward didn’t disappoint. The Paradise Valley, Ariz., native started his charge slowly, making a bogey on the third hole. He didn’t stumble again on his way to a three-shot win at Savannah (Ga.) Harbor Golf Club.

Coward trailed Michael Kelly of Sanford, N.C., by a single shot to start the day. When Coward played his first four holes in 1 over and Kelly played his in 1 under, Coward found himself with even more ground to make up.

That’s when he started making birdies. Coward rattles off three in the next four holes, then two more on the back nine. He didn’t make another bogey and finished with a final-round 4-under 68. Kelly had a closing 72 to remain at 5 under while Coward moved to 8 under.

Two more players finished the tournament under par. Both Bobby Lundquist of Sanford, Fla., and Mark Weston of Windermere, Fla., were 2 under for the tournament with closing rounds of 68 and 67, respectively.

In the legends division, Randolph Russell of St. Simons Island, Ga., had a closing 71 to finish a 1 over and top Frank Perry of Fayetteville, Ga., by two shots.

Jim Rollefson of Bonita Springs, Fla., was third at 4 over.

ROUND TWO RECAP

To get an idea of just how competitive the U.S. Super Senior National Championship is, look no further than leader Michael Kelly’s card. The Sanford, N.C., native didn’t have a bogey on Saturday. Instead, he strung together seven birdies for a round of 65 at the Club at Savannah (Ga.) Harbor and at 5 under, will take a one-shot lead into the final round.

In many fields, a second-round 65 would be enough to pull away. But in Savannah, Kelly still has company near the top of the leaderboard. Mark Coward, after firing rounds of 71-67, is 4 under and only trails by one. The Paradise Valley, Ariz., resident only had one bogey on Saturday to match four birdies.

James Castagna of Sandy Springs, Md., is third at 1 over while Bobby Lundquist of Sanford, Fla., is fourth at 2 over.

In the legends division, Jim Rollefson of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Randolph Russell of St. Simsons Island, Ga., both stand at 2 over after identical rounds of 74-72. John Osborne of Vero Beach, Fla., is a shot back
