WASSENAAR, Netherlands (June 30, 2018) - Nicolai Hojgaard of Denmark had some breathing room with one hole remaining at the European Amateur but he did everything in his power to make things as interesting as possible.
Leading by three shots on the tee of the 72nd hole at Royal Hague Golf Club Hojgaard managed to piece together a double-bogey on the closing par-5 to just hold on by a stroke. Following rounds of 71-69-68 Hojgaard began the final round 8-under and was as low as 9-under on Saturday before settling for a 1-over 73 in the final round and a 7-under finish.
Ultimately the most decisive stroke of the day for Hojgaard, who played in the 2017 Made In Denmark on the European Tour, came in the form of a birdie par-4 16th. The win for Hojgaard helps the Denmark native continue what has already been an impressive season that includes a tied for sixth showing at the Portuguese International Amateur and a tied for 12th at the European Nations Cup.
Irish Amateur Open winner Robin Dawson (Ireland), Jerry Ji (Netherlands), Oklahoma State star Viktor Hovland (Norway) and Mitch Waite (England) all shared second at 6-under to round out the top-five.
