ELGIN, Ill. — John Ehrgott of Edwards, Ill. captured the 2015 Chicago Mid-Amateur Championship title on Wednesday with a 5-and-4 victory over Michael Natale of Indian Head Park.
With the win, Ehrgott became the first player to have won both the Chicago Mid-Amateur and the Illinois State Mid-Amateur, a title in which he has won two times. Ehrgott captured his first Illinois Mid-Amateur in 2007, and most recent was victorious again in 2009.
"It feels special," Ehrgott told the CDGA. "I haven't won any match play event and I've never had a lot of success in match play so it feels great to come out and win a match play event against great competition."
The 18-hole final, as well as the entirety of the tournament, was played at Bowes Creek Country Club in Elgin, Ill. and was conduced by the Chicago District Golf Association. This was the first year that the championship was played in a match play format.
Both Ehrgott and Natale reached the championship match was narrow one-up victories in their semifinal matches on Tuesday afternoon, with Natale beating Mike Henry and Ehrgott knocking off Chris Schultz.
Ehrgott was one of three players to shoot 70 in stroke play qualifying, alongside Dylan Gergen and Jon Zolecki. Gergen was granted the No. 1 seed, but was defeated in the first-round by 16-seed Glenn Przybylski in 21 holes.
