WILMINGTON, N.C. (July 16, 2014) –– The 24-golfer Carolinas team posted a wire-to-wire 26-point victory (67-41) over their Virginias counterparts to win the 58th Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches, which concluded today at Porter’s Neck Country Club.
Carolinas, owners of a 15-point lead entering the final day of the event, won closing day modified four-ball matches by 11 points (23½-12½). Carolinas notched eight wins in 12 encounters on day three. In the format, three points are available per match; a point is scored for winning the outward half, the inward nine and the overall match.
Carolinas received six shutouts and the accompanying three points from the following tandems: Lea Anne Brown (Mount Pleasant, S.C.)-Anne Washington (Myrtle Beach, S.C.), Hayley Hammond (Mooresville, N.C.)-Mallory Hetzel (Waynesville, N.C.), Amanda D’Ostroph (Whispering Pines, N.C.)-Savannah Hallman (Mount Pleasant, S.C.), Patty Moore (Charlotte, N.C.)-Karen Ferree (Hilton Head, S.C.), Kathryn Miranda (Lexington, S.C.)-Elizabeth Thompson (Charleston, S.C.) and Karli Heimbecker (Sanford, N.C.)-Emily Stinson (Charlotte, N.C.).
Virginias posted a trio of 3-0 blankings from the combinations of northern Virginians Kristine Rohrbaugh (Reston, Va.)-Lauren Greenlief (Oakton, Va.) as well as Alexandra Austin (Burke, Va.)-Hannah Pierce (King George, Va.)
Carolinas also received a win and two and a half points from the team of Susan Beaupied (Raleigh, N.C.)-Leigh Coulter (Hopkins, S.C.) and a victory and two points from Ashley Thompson (Clyde, N.C.)-Julie Streng (Greensboro, N.C.). Virginians Cindy Morris (Portsmouth, Va.)-Susan Podolsky (Alexandria, Va.) registered a win and two points.

The Virginias-Carolinas Women's Team Matches
originated in 1957. The matches pit some of the
best
golfers from North and South Carolina against their
Virginia and West Virginia counterparts. The
championship consists of four-ball match play,
modified alternate shot four-ball match play and
singles matches. In the format, a point is scored for
winning the outward half, the inward nine and the
overall match. The Carolinas team consists of 24
total players; 14 amateur players (ages 18+), eight
senior players (ages 50+) and two super senior
players (ages 60+). The matches are invitation only.
