Van Fleet wins Maine Senior Amateur
OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine (Aug. 29, 2013) -- Jim Van Fleet, the eight-time consecutive Great Chebeague Golf Club Champion, has captured the 2013 Maine Senior Championship, sealing his victory with the only below-par round in the 36-hole championship at the challenging Dunegrass Golf Club in Old Orchard Beach.
Van Fleet birdied the eighth and ninth holes to shoot 38 on the front, then added four more birdies on the back en route to a 33 for a one-under 71 total. He finished the two day event at one-over 145 after shooting 74 Tuesday.
The Senior Championship is played in four flights, with the overall champion determined by whomever shoots the lowest score, regardless of flight. Both Van Fleet and second place finisher Truman Libby played in the 65-69 age flight so while Van Fleet is the overall winner, Libby won his flight with a 150.
Finishing in third, playing out of the Woodlands Club (where Van Fleet is also a member and Libby works part-time) was two time Maine Senior Champion Alan Bouchard, who finished with a 153.
In a three-way tie for fourth -- and also for first in the 55-59 flight -- were Gary Manoogian from Falmouth, Ron Dery from Biddeford-Saco and Tom Bean from Augusta. The trio each shot 154.
Winning the 60-64 age flight was Mark Curtis from Augusta who was at 156 while Jim Surette from Point Sebago won the 70 and older flight, also at 156. The two tied for eighth overall.
With his victory, Van Fleet receives an automatic invitation to the Tri-State Championship, which Maine plays annually against Vermont and New Hampshire. This year's championship will be conducted on Sept. 20-22 at Martindale in Auburn. Maine will try to defend the title that it won last year at Jay Peak in Vermont.
