Jimmy Chestnut of Royal Oaks, MI, and
Robert Gerwin of Cincinnati, OH, emerged winners in the Mid-Am and Senior categories at the C.B. MacDonald Invitational at National Golf Links of America in Southampton, N.Y.
Chestnut, a former University of Michigan player, shot a 1-over 73 in qualifying, securing a comfortable spot in the top 16 and advancing to the Championship match play bracket. He then won four matches to claim the title, defeating Park Ulrich 2&1, Johnny DelPrete 2&1 in the quarterfinals, Christian Cavaliere 3&2 in the semifinals, and Nate Smith in the finals 5&4.
Notably, Smith reached the final 16 at the 2023 U.S. Mid-Amateur at New York's Sleepy Hollow Country Club.
The defending champion, Matthew Devito, was defeated by No.8 seed Brad Tilley in his first match after qualifying.
In the senior division, Robert Gerwin, the semifinalist at the 2022 edition of the tournament, shot 2-over 74 to finish 7th in qualifying. He then won his three matches, defeating No. 2 seed Ryan Howison 5&4 in the Quarterfinals and No.3 seed Steve Harwell 2&1 in the Semifinals.
He then took down Jack Hall, the No.10 senior player on the
AmateurGolf.com Senior Rankings 3&2 in the finals to lift the title.
The 18-hole qualifying round divided the top two mid-amateur fields into match-play brackets of 16 players each, while the remaining six flights were arranged into brackets of 8 players each. Similarly, the senior field was divided into brackets of 8 players.
