Watersound Invitational: Vanderbilt successfully defends its title

Vanderbilt won the Watersound Invitational at Sharks Tooth Golf Club in Panama City Beach, Fla., for the second consecutive season, starting off its spring campaign in the best way possible.
The Commodores shot consistent rounds of 278-278-279 and a final round 9-under to finish 29-under and win by nine shots.
Florida State and Georgia Tech finished T2 at 20-under. Florida State shot a final-round 11-under 277, and Georgia Tech shot a final-round 12-under 276 to get to T2.
Virginia finished in solo fourth place at 15-under, and Oklahoma State finished in solo fifth place at 10-under. Clemson finished in solo sixth place at 6-under, and Ohio State finished in solo seventh place at 5-under.
This is the second straight season that the Commodores have claimed the team title at the Watersound Invitational, while it is Vanderbilt’s fourth team victory of the season.
In the individual competition, Gray Albright of Florida State held off Gordon Sargent of Vanderbilt and Christo Lamprecht of Georgia Tech to win by one shot at 10-under.
Albright shot a final round 4-under 68 and recorded five birdies and one bogey. Albright birdied his first two holes
Thomas Ponder of Alabama finished in solo fourth place at 8-under, while Cole Sherwood of Vanderbilt and Cole Anderson finished in solo fifth place at 7-under.
Five golfers finished T7 at 6-under, including Jackson Van Paris of Vanderbilt, bolstering their team score.
With the win, Albright moves up to No. 134 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com U.S. Rankings. Sargent is currently ranked No. 1 and Lamprecht is ranked No. 5 in the rankings. Sargent was the low amateur at the 2023 U.S. Open, and Lamprecht was the low amateur at the 2023 Open Championship, earning the Silver Medal.
