The UNC Wilmington men’s golf team dominated its hometown event, firing rounds of 284-278-275 to post a 15-under total and win by 16 shots at the Seahawk Intercollegiate, held at Cape Fear Country Club in Wilmington, N.C.
The Seahawks were the only team to finish under par — and did so by a wide margin. James Madison finished runner-up at 1-over with rounds of 284-280-289, while Stetson took third at 1-over with rounds of 289-279-289.
Stetson’s second-round 279 was one of only three sub-280 rounds in the tournament, the other two belonging to the champion Seahawks.
UNCW led the 13-team field in par-3 and par-4 scoring, ranking seventh in par-5 scoring. Only Jacksonville (59) made more birdies than the Seahawks (55).
The win marks the first of the 2024-25 season for UNCW.
Florida Atlantic sophomore Nashawn Tyson captured his first collegiate victory in dominant fashion, carding rounds of 64-65-68 to finish at 16 under — seven shots clear of James Madison’s Vaclav Tichy.
Tyson made 18 birdies and an eagle across three rounds and was one of only two players to post three rounds in the 60s.
Tichy opened with a 1-under 71 that included two eagles, then closed with rounds of 65-69 to finish solo second at 9 under. The UNCW duo of James Rico and Gray Mitchum took third and fourth, finishing at 8 under and 6 under, respectively.
Toledo’s Mads Jensen bounced back from an opening 76 with a tournament-low 64 in round two, followed by a closing 69. He tied for fifth at 4 under with Stetson’s Rasmus Ronnberg, who fired steady rounds of 69-69-71.
The champion Seahawks will return to action at the Stitch Invitational, which will be held April 11-12 in Raleigh, N.C.
