ENTRY ALERT: Register now for the U.S. Open
Local qualifying for the 123rd U.S. Open, conducted over 18 holes at 109 sites in 44 U.S. states and Canada, will take place between April 17-May 22. Those players who advance out of local qualifying will join a group of locally exempt players in final qualifying, which will be conducted over 36 holes.

To register now, visit the USGA Website.

The final stage will be held in England (May 16), Japan (May 22) and Canada (June 5) as well as 10 U.S. sites, one on May 22 and nine on June 5.

Some familiar venues will once again host local qualifying. The Illini Country Club, in Springfield, Ill., will hold a local qualifier for the 44th consecutive year in which qualifying has been conducted while Riverton (Wyo.) Country Club and Ironwood Country Club, in Palm Desert, Calif., will host local qualifying for the 25th and 22nd year, respectively. Collindale Golf Course, in Fort Collins, Colo., has been a host site since 2003.

Our editorial staff also came up with a list of five of the best clubs selected to host a U.S. Open Local Qualifier.

Online player registration for the 2023 U.S. Open will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at lchamps.usga.org and will continue through Wednesday, April 12.

THE PRESERVE GOLF CLUB
The Santa Lucia Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop for The Preserve Golf Club. The Tom Fazio-designed course meanders through stands of massive ancient oaks, beautiful rolling meadows, ponds, and streams. The Preserve hosts the west coast's premier Mid-Amateur event each year -- The Stocker Cup -- and will certainly be a preferred qualifying site for Stocker tournament champions like former Cal golfer Michael Jensen.

SECESSION GOLF CLUB -- Beaufort, South Carolina
The club is named for the Secession House in nearby Beaufort, where the first meetings were held for South Carolina to formally secede from the United States before the start of the Civil War. Golf Digest says, "Secession demands a complete game, both aerial and ground, particularly in steady ocean breezes."

ORCHARDS GOLF CLUB
In golf, the term "hidden-gem" is perhaps one of the most overused descriptions of a course. But the Donald Ross design at Orchards in Western Massachusetts certainly fits the bill. Orchard's Glen Golf Club hosted the 2004 U.S. Women's Open won by Meg Mallon and has also served as the host of numerous Massachusetts state championships.

The course was designed by famed architect Perry Maxwell, designer of countless courses in Oklahoma and the midwest, including the original nine at Prairie Dunes in Kansas. The 2021 U.S. Senior Open site proved to be a popular host, with Jim Furyk rising to the top and hoisting the trophy, becoming just the eighth man to win both the U.S. Open and Senior Open titles.

The Club at Olde Stone, Bowling Green, Ky.
Perennially ranked as one of Kentucky's best, the club was designed by Arthur Hills, and recognized as one of the ten best new private courses in 2007 (before the Great Recession, when private clubs were opening in large numbers). The course's newly-installed Zoysia fairways and classic bentgrass greens are dotted with 99 bunkers. If you like the perched lies that Zoysia can provide, and have a solid bunker game, Olde Stone might be the site for you.

ABOUT THE U.S. Open Golf Championship

The U.S. Open is the biggest of the 15 national championships conducted by the USGA. Open to amateurs and professionals. Amateurs gain entry via USGA win or runner-up finishes while having the opportunity to qualify alongside non-exempt professionals in an 18-hole "Local' qualifying followed by 36-hole "Final" qualifying which is affectionately known as golf's longest day. Highly-ranked amateurs will be exempted past the 18-hole Local Qualifying. See the USGA website for details. And if you are exempt on any level be sure to apply by the deadline anyway.

The USGA intends to make the U.S. Open the most rigorous, yet fair, examination of golf skills, testing all forms of shot-making. The USGA prepares the course after careful consideration of 14 different factors.
