University of Colorado freshman Morgan Miller (Cedar Park, Texas) defeated Ina Kim-Schaad by a margin of 2 & 1 to claim the championship title at the Jones/Doherty Women's Amateur at Coral Ridge Country Club.
Miller was happy to show off her winter tan, and despite some blustery conditions in the final round, she couldn't have been more pleased with the Florida weather.
“It is a lot warmer here,” said Miller, who left the 20-degree below weather for some
South Florida sunshine and temperatures in the 70s to make her Doherty debut. “I got
to wear shorts and a tank top, so it was nothing like Colorado.
If only the victory were easy as Florida breezes.
After qualifying in the third position and never seeing a match go past the 16th hole in the championship bracket, Miller faced a formidable opponent in the final in Kim-Schaad, the 2019 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion.
“Today was tough,” she said. It was a dogfight. I was 1-up, she was 1-up. Neither of
us let anything go. I was just fortunate enough to pull off the win. I won with par-par
at the end. I just had to force her to make birdies and I made pars and did my thing.”
Canice Screen. took out the defending champion Brook Oberparleiter in the first round but was defeated by Kim-Schaad, who won a close match against Dawn Woodard.
Recently-named USA Curtis Cup Captain Meghan. Stasi was in the championship field but failed to advance through the first round of match play after qualifying in 10th position.
AmateurGolf.com member Shelly Haywood (Huntington Beach, Calif.) won the senior championship in 20 holes over 2017 U.S. Senior Amateur champion Judith Kyrinis of Canada.
"I'm grateful and blessed to be on this list of champions," said Haywood. "The last match was an epic battle."
