AUSTIN, TX (August 6, 2016) -- Devin Jackson backs up
his first round lead with a two-under-par, 70 to keep
the lead headed in the Final Round of the North
Amateur at Hurricane Creek Country Club. Hunter
Shattucks’s six-under-par, 66 moves him to within one
of the lead.
Devin Jackson, Longview, started his day with six
straight pars before he could extend his lead on the 194
yard par three, 16th. That birdie didn’t last long as it
was erased with a bogey on the 18th hole as he made
the turn. His back side, which was the front nine,
though began the same way he started his day
yesterday, birdies on the first and second holes. A
bogey on the 211 yard par three, fifth was answered
right away with a birdie on the downhill par five, sixth.
Pars from there allowed Jackson to reach nine-under-
par for the championship and a one shot lead of the
field.
Hunter Shattuck’s round of six-under-par 66 turned
out to be the low round of the day that skyrocketed him
to a solo second position. Shattuck began his round five
shots back of leader Jackson. His deficit was quickly cut
to two with birdies on the 11th, 16th and 17th holes.
His momentum kept going as he rolled in three more
right in a row on holes one through three. The
Jacksonville native was six-under-par before he
bogeyed the 5th. He poured one more in on the ninth
to get back to his six-under-par round and eight under
for the championship.
Aaron Hickman, Tyler, kept pace with Jackson by
firing his own two-under-par round for a two day total
of 137, seven under for the championship. Hickman who
already captured the 2016 North Mid-Am Championship
this season, opened his day with a birdie on the first
hole. A bogey on the third brought him back to even
before he birdied two of the last four holes coming in.
Including the ninth hole, Hickman recorded ten straight
pars to maintain his red figure for the day.
Rounding out the top five on the leaderboard are
Addison’s Sean Heidrick, Justin’s Brandon Scott and
Dallas’ Levi Petiti. Heidrick and Scott both fired rounds
of two-under-par to gain entry into the North Amateur’s
penultimate group. Petit kept himself at level par for the
day to maintain his position. Also, in the tied for 5th
position was Dallas’ Rob Couture whose four-under-par
round got him to five-under for the tournament.
Jackson, Shattuck and Hickman will battle it out
tomorrow along the rest of the field to see who will
become the North Amateur Champion. Hickman can
become just the second player to recorded two
individual North Regional Titles in the same year since
Rob Couture did it in 2009.
Hurricane Creek Country Club played to 7,083
yards for the 2nd round of the North Amateur with
scores averaging at about 76, four over par. The 2nd
hole played easiest on the day with four eagles and
numerous birdies. The 5th hole played hardest with
just three birdies recorded all day.
Tee times will once again begin off the first and
tenth tee starting at 7:30 a.m. CDT. Jackson, Shattuck
and Hickman will go off at 9:27 a.m. off the first.
