Andres Gallegos defeats Austin Connelly in Argentine Amateur final
Andres Gallegos
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Nov. 16, 2014) — Austin Connelly had Andres Gallegos down three after 18 holes, and things were looking good for the Canadian to defeat the Argentinian in the 36-hole Argentine Amateur final.
But Gallegos stormed back, making four birdies over the next nine holes to make it all square through 27. Then he made four more birdies on the next six and closed out Connelly 4-and-3 to complete an incredible comeback.
Connelly, who will attend Wake Forest University in the fall of 2015, played the first 18 holes five-under but the next 15 holes even par. He reached the final after handing medalist and fellow countryman Corey Conners in the semifinals.
Gallegos also had to defeat a friend, Andres Schonbaum, to get into the final match.
