BEMIDJI, Minn. (August 30, 2014) — Tom Jenkins of Champlin, Minn. is attempting to defend his title at the Vandersluis Memorial, and he's off to a good start. He opened the three-day event with a two-under par 70 at Bemidji Town and Country Club, leading the field by one shot.

Two players are right behind Jenkins, including Tyler Hill and Justin Johnson. In all, there are 12 players within five shots of the lead with 36 holes to play.

This year's event is the 47th running, having many notable past champions including 1996 British Open winner and successful PGA TOUR player Tom Lehman, who is a native of Minnesota.

ABOUT THE The Vandersluis Memorial

The Vandersluis Memorial Golf Tournament is held each year at the Bemidji Town & Country Club over Labor Day Weekend. The event has an international field with divisions for Men, Senior Men and Ladies. Past men's champions (including 1996 British Open Champion Tom Lehman) have gone on to successful professional and amateur careers. The format provides top competition for players of all ability.

There are 6 different divisions that players can enter:
• Mens Champs- Open to men of all ages
• Sr. Men's Champ-Open to men age 50 and over
• Master's Champ-Open to men age 65 and over
• Men's Regular flight-Open to men age 19 and over
• Sr Men's Regular flight-Open to men age 50 and over
• Ladies Regular flight-Open to ladies age 19 and over
