Jeff Burda wins Trans-Miss Senior
LA QUINTA, Calif. (May 22, 2014) -- Jeff Burda put the finishing touches on an impressive run to win the 2014 Trans-Mississippi Senior Championship.
At La Quinta Country Club, Burda shot a final-round 72 to keep pace and hold off a final-round surge from Dave Mooty and win by two shots. For the event, Burda shot 73-71-72 to finish at even par.
The steady Burda, who recently won his fifth overall title at the Sacramento County Senior, was two shots clear of Mooty, who climbed the leaderboard with a final-round 68. That 4-under score was the lowest card of the tournament and helped him jump six spots to take solo second.
Bill Brammer (78-73-70), Mac McGee (74-73-74) and Gary Hardin (75-71-75) all tied for third place, finishing five shots back of Burda's pace.
Defending champion Corky Nelso tied for 33rd place.
In the Super Senior Division, Gary Shemano topped Sam Boyd on the first playoff hole to win a wild one.
Boyd shot a closing 71 to force a playoff with Shemano, who shot 75 in the final round. The two would play just one hole -- which Shemano won with a par.
Boyd's remarkable comeback gave him solo second while John Richarto (68-80-78) placed third.
