More than ninety years ago, an ambitious real estate developer, Edwin P. Ansley, set out to create what was then considered an innovative community. He saw people making their residences away from inner cities, and wanted to be the first to promote suburban living in Atlanta. This intimate neighborhood community became Ansley Park.
In addition to promoting suburban living, Ansley saw another growing trend in the game of golf. He envisioned a course that would be as inviting and interesting as his new Ansley Park. It would "afford plenty of sport for experienced golfers, and at the same time... not be too difficult for those who wish to play purely for recreation." To design it, he enlisted the help of some of the most notable names in the game. In 1912, his Ansley Park Golf Course became a reality.
The first clubhouse was built in 1915. "The site selected is upon a beautiful elevation overlooking a large part of the golf course. The plans have been drawn by the well-known Architect, W.L. Stoddart, of New York, and every convenience has been provided for the members of the Club."
The Ansley Park Golf Club started as a semi-public golf course with 15-cent green fees. As fees increased, some golfers would object, and in 1915 the original voluntary association elected to form a private Club. More than forty years later, Ansley Park Golf Club changed its name to Ansley Golf Club, and evolved into one of the most successful in-town golf courses in the country.
