Palmetto Amateur: Reach tops Strohmeyer in playoff
AIKEN, S.C. (June 9, 2013) -- Nicholas Reach birdied the second hole of a sudden-death playoff with Scott Strohmeyer to kick off his summer with a win at the Palmetto Amateur at the par-70 Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
Strohmeyer, fresh off a national title with Alabama, birdied the par-4 18th to force the playoff, rebounding from a bogey at No. 17 that looked to give Reach the title outright.
Reach, a junior at Georgia and former winner of the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley, had three back-nine birdies en route to a 2-under 68, following a 4-under 66 that vaulted him to within two shots of the 36-hole leader, Sam Love.
Love struggled to a final-round 72, carding birdies at Nos. 17 and 18, but it was too little, too late after a triple-bogey 7 on the par-4 15th. Love would finish fourth at 3 under, while Ben Fogler finished one shot out of the playoff after a 1-under 69 on Saturday pushed him to 4 under overall.
Only eight of the 69 players who made the weather-driven cut shot under par for the tournament.
