West Virg. Mid-Am: Rainy day kicks off event
CHARLESTON, W.VA.— The 2013 West Virginia Mid-Amateur Championship was off to a soggy start today, as multiple storm delays took play well into the seven o’clock hour. Eighteen-hole Stroke Play qualifying for Match Play concluded without delay, as sunny skies graced Berry Hills Country Club’s course. Charleston’s Philip Reale, II was the qualifier’s Medalist—the only player to shoot even-par the entire round. Defending Champion and 2013 Hall of Fame inductee, Pat Carter, finished Stroke Play at -1, along with four other players. 2011 Champion, Sam O’Dell, also made a fine appearance in Stroke Play, finishing 3-over-par 73. The top 32 players made it to the Match Play portion of the Championship, making 78 the cut. Nine players went into a sudden-death playoff for six spots to close in the top 32. Two storm delays postponed Match Play for nearly two hours total this afternoon, although it didn’t seem to affect several players in the field. Reale continued his streak in the Round of 32, defeating Parkersburg’s Steve Hussey, and made a hole-and-one on his final hole of the match (#12, par 3, 152 yards). The number one seed moves on to the Round of 16 tomorrow, going up against Charleston’s Todd Branham at 8 a.m. Carter won his match against Huntington’s Ryan Matney, 5 and 4, advancing to the Round of 16 against fellow Hall of Famer, Harold Payne. The WV Mid-Amateur continues tomorrow at Berry Hills Country Club, with the Round of 16 matches beginning at 8 a.m.
