Gallery Invitational: Peebles/Rosen, Whitney/Sweigart take titles
TUCSON, Arizona (April 27, 2013) -- Fifteen states were represented at the 2013 Gallery Invitational, but local teams captured both Championship and Senior Divisions.
Chris Peebles and Matt Rosen, both playing out of Tucson Country Club, withstood a Saturday charge by Bryan Hoops (Arizona Country Club) and Jeremy Defalco (Tucson Country Club) to win the Championship Division by a single stroke.
Defalco and Hoops simply lit up the South Course, turning in a 9-under 63 that looked really good on the leaderboard as it placed them at 11-under 133 for the tournament. Peebles and Rosen, playing in the final group with Jon Bridges and Scott Drake of Utah, posted a 65 on top of their first round 67 (12-under for the tournament) to edge Defalco and Hoops. Christopher Lee and Jeff Smith, playing out of Gaillardia Country Club in Oklahoma, finished solo third at 136.
In the Senior Division, Gallery Golf Club member Cyrus Whitney and partner Tom Sweigart of Del Lago Golf Club posted 8-under 64 in on Friday on the North Course, and followed it with a 7-under 65 on the South to run away with the Senior Division at 15-under 129. Steven Borget and Randy Hicken of Utah finished in second at 7-under 137.
Whitney, a retired banker from New Jersey was cajoled the night before the tournament about the number of tournament rounds he posts; clearly it pays off as he has already captured the AmateurGolf.com San Diego County Amateur this year in January, and the Sun Country Stroke play in New Mexico (winning not only the senior but overall title as well). His partner Sweigart got the team off to the right start in Friday’s first round by birdieing the first two holes and posting 31 on the first nine of play on the North.
The Whitney/Sweigart team also captured the Senior Division title in 2011, the year that division was added.
