Virginia leads West Virginia in team matches
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.VA.— Following the first round of the 2013 West Virginia-Virginia
Team Matches, team West Virginia is down by 19 points. This year’s edition of the historical
matches is being hosted by The Greenbrier Sporting Club, where 14 of West Virginia’s top golfers
are going head-to-head with Virginia’s best.
Turning out positive results today was Charleston’s Bosten Miller and Huntington’s Ian Patrick, who
were Four-Ball and Foursomes partners throughout the day. The team won each match but two.
Also earning points for the West Virginia team were Barboursville’s Bruce Wetherholt and Green
Bank’s Chad Baldwin, who won each match but two. The well-known pair of Harold Payne and
Steve Fox brought out their usual game today, earning points for three matches.
Although the current points standing are 30 ½ - 11 ½, Singles matches begin bright and early
tomorrow, where just as many points will be available as there were during today’s.
The formats of this weekend’s matches include four-ball, foursomes and singles matches.
The WV-VA Team Matches first began in 1949, with a few years where the tournament was not
played. Team West Virginia suffered a devastating loss year, and has not won the “Ye Ole’ Feudin
Stick” since 2009. Last year was the first time Team West Virginia had ever held a lead on Virginia
soil, as they gained a first round lead at Ballyhack Golf Club in Roanoke.
