Cal wins 8th title at Southern Highlands Masters

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (March 10, 2013) -- California has done it again. The No.1-ranked team in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings won its eighth title of the season at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters on Sunday by 13 shots in Las Vegas, Nev.

Cal was only team under par in the event and finished at 8-under 856.

Cal headed into the final round with an 11-shot lead by shooting the low team scores during the first- and second-round. On the final day, they shot 3 over.

All five Cal players finished in the top 12. Sophomore Michael Kim, No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, finished as co-champion after a one-hole playoff. He has finished in the top 10 in all nine tournaments this season. Senior Max Homa and junior Joel Stalter finished T-7 at 1-over 217. Juniors Michael Weaver and Brandon Hagy finished T-11 at 2-over 218.

Alabama and New Mexico finished in a tie for second with a three-day total of 5-over 869 total. UCLA finished in fourth, one-shot back at 6-over 870. Rounding out the top five was Stanford at 12 over.

For the individual title, there was a four-way playoff between Cal’s Michael Kim, New Mexico’s James Erkenbeck, Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers and Alabama’s Cory Whitsett. All four players are credited with a victory.

Rodgers, who had to birdie 18 in the final round to get into the playoff, birdie the 18th again to win his third tournament of the year. Rodgers shot 66-73-73.

Kim, Erkenbeck and Whitsett each had birdie opportunities, but all made par on the first playoff hole.
