FRANKLIN, Tenn. (Nov. 30, 2012) -- The Tennessee Golf Association would like to announce the 2012 Tennessee Amateur, Senior Amateur, Women’s Amateur, and Women’s Senior Amateur Players of the Year. Each of the winners had successful years that saw individual championships for each. The Players of the Year are as follows:
Tennessee Amateur Player of the Year – Steven Fox (Hendersonville)
Tennessee Senior Amateur Player of the Year – Danny Green (Jackson)
Tennessee Women’s Amateur Player of the Year – Lauren Stratton (Spring Hill)
Tennessee Women’s Senior Amateur Player of the Year – Jean Roise (Crossville)
Steven Fox, a senior at UT-Chattanooga, captured his title based on a solid summer schedule that culminated with a win at the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship. Steven qualified locally for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, then started his summer as a semi-finalist in the TN Match Play Championship. At the APL, Steven advanced to the quarterfinals before being eliminated. Next he advanced to the first round of the TN Four-Ball Championship before making his way to Colorado for the U.S. Amateur. He survived a playoff to advance to match play, won five matches, and then rallied from 2 down with two to play to win the championship on the 37th hole. Steven played on the record setting U.S. squad at the World Amateur Team Championship and will represent the U.S. again at the Copas de las Americas in January. This is Steven’s first TN Amateur Player of the Year award.
Danny Green |
Danny Green is no stranger to winning Player of the Year awards having won 10 Amateur Player of the Year titles. Danny began his run to the title by finishing as a co-champion at the rain-shortened TN Senior State Open. He went on to finish as a quarter-finalist at the TN Senior Match Play and tenth place at the TN Amateur Championship. In his next event, Danny captured his first TN Senior Amateur Championship, leading the event wire to wire. After qualifying for the U.S. Senior Amateur, he secured enough points for the title with a second place finish at the TN Mid-Amateur Championship. This is Danny’s first TN Senior Amateur Player of the Year award.
Lauren Stratton |
Lauren Stratton, a senior at Vanderbilt, would pull off a double that had only previously been accomplished by two fellow Vanderbilt golfers. Lauren began her summer by capturing the TN Women’s Amateur Championship at Foxland Harbor. Having qualified for the Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship, she made it to the match play portion of the championship before losing her first round match. A month after her TN Amateur victory, Lauren captured the TN Women’s State Open, rallying from a one shot deficit the last day. By completing the historic double, she joins current Vanderbilt teammate Kendall Martindale and Vanderbilt alum Sarah Jacobs as the only three women to accomplish the feat in the same year. This is Lauren’s first TN Women’s Amateur Player of the Year award.
Jean Roise |
Jean Roise won the Senior Player of the Year award, and in doing so, becomes only the fourth woman to win the award since it’s induction in 2000. Jean started her trek by qualifying for the Championship flight at the TN Women’s Amateur. A few months later, Jean and her partner Carole Fuller won the TN Women’s Four-Ball by two shots. She added an individual title to her resume by surviving the water logged conditions at Oak Ridge CC to capture the TN Women’s Senior Amateur Championship that would clinch the point’s race. This is Jean’s first TN Women’s Senior Player of the Year award.
