Chico City: Former champ Jones beats top seed

ChicoER.comCHICO, Calif. (Sept. 17, 2012) -- No. 17 seed Brian Jones turned back the clock in the second round of match play Sunday during the 85th annual Chico City Championship golf tournament at Bidwell Park Golf Course, eliminating former Chico State golfer and top seed Cole Fisher 3 and 2.
Jones, the 1996 city champion, will play in the quarterfinals next Saturday morning against No. 25 seed Cody Conway, a 3-and-2 second-round winner over ninth-seeded Justin Chambers, a current Pleasant Valley High golfer. In the first round Sunday, Jones won 2 and 1 over former city champ and PGA Tour player Jim Wilson, a 2003 Chico Sports Hall of Fame inductee.
Seeding was determined by stroke play on Saturday.
In the bottom half of that bracket, No. 4 seed Bryce Johnson beat No. 29 Dave Koistenen 7 and 6, then reached the quarterfinals with a 4-and-3 win over No. 13 Taylor Manna. Johnson will face No. 12 Jeff Nedved, a 2-and-1 second-round winner over current Chico State player Raymon Tira, seeded fifth.
In the other half of the draw, No. 2 seed Dan DeKock survived a 1-up win over No. 31 Brian Doran in the first round and defeated No. 18 Jeff Merica 4 and 3 in the second. DeKock faces No. 23 Jason Roberts in the quarterfinals. Roberts got past PV High junior Tyler Collier, the seventh seed, 2 and 1 in the second round.
