ROCKY MOUNT, NC – Final results of the 19th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount, NC on Sunday, September 16, 2012 (6558 yards, par 36-36—72, 71.8/137).
Fighting on and off rain showers and a tough Benvenue golf course number one ranked amateur in the Carolinas, Scott Harvey of Greensboro, NC, wins the 19th North Carolina Mid-Amateur championship by two strokes over 2009 NC Mid-Amateur champion Paul Tucker of Waxhaw, NC and reigning NC Amateur and NC Amateur Match Play champion Matthew Crenshaw of Burlington, NC.
Harvey finished the championship at two-over 216 and is his fourth CGA title. “I got off to a fast start today,” stated Harvey who birdied two of the first three holes.
“Then the rain came and I was in survival mode the rest of the way. I knew that it would be hard for anyone to make birdies with the weather conditions. If I played steady then I had a good chance.”
2007 NC Mid-Amateur champion Gary Robinson of Fayetteville, NC finished alone in fourth place at 219. Defending champion, Brian Westveer of Charlotte, NC, posted a two-under 70 to finish in a tie for fifth place at 220 along with 25-time CGA champion Paul Simson of Raleigh, NC. The course played as a par 71 the first two rounds with the 10th hole playing as a 465-yard par 4. The course played as a par 72 for the final round with the 10th hole played as a 485-yard par 5. Scott Harvey, Paul Simson and Bruce Woodall of Yanceyville, NC head to Galloway, New Jersey this week to represent North Carolina at the USGA State Team Championship to be played September 19-21 at Galloway National Golf Club.
