Kevin Carrigan
VANCOUVER (Sept. 6, 2012) -- Kevin Carrigan of Victoria, B.C. carded a third-round score of 3-over par 75 to lead the 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship through 54 holes of play at Point Grey Golf & Country Club in Vancouver.
Carrigan, who started the day atop the leaderboard with a five-stroke lead, posted six bogeys and three birdies during Thursday’s round to sit at 1-under par 215 for the championship, one shot ahead of defending Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Rob Couture of Trenton, Ont. Couture, now a resident of Dallas, Tex., shot 4-under par 68 on Thursday for a three-day tally of even-par 216.
“I wasn’t hitting it in play. I probably missed ten of the fourteen fairways, and it was a grind,” said Carrigan, the reigning B.C. Mid-Amateur champion. “I didn’t try to change my game plan because I believe in what I’m doing. I just couldn’t get it in play off the tee. Every time I was on a green in regulation, I had a really good chance for birdie, but I shot 75 with three birdies. That’s just too many mistakes.”
While Carrigan was disappointed in his performance, the University of Texas at Arlington product explained that his game plan will remain unchanged going forward.
“I like my game plan. I’m going to hit a lot of drivers tomorrow (Friday) and not get scared of anything,” said Carrigan. “The one thing about a one-shot lead is that it’s hardly a lead. The idea is not to think about it and just go out and play your game and see what happens.”
Three-time Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Dave Bunker of Woodbridge, Ont. is third at 1-over par 217, while Saskatoon’s Tyler Frank, the reigning Saskatchewan Amateur and Mid-Amateur champion, is fourth at 2-over par 218. Danny Lovell of Dallas, Tex. is fifth at 3-over par 219.
Bunker, meanwhile, holds a commanding six-stroke lead in the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship Mid-Master Division over Craig Doell of Victoria, B.C. Doell sits at 7-over par 223. Canadian Golf Hall of Fame Honoured Member Doug Roxburgh of Vancouver is third in the Mid-Master Division standings at 8-over par 224.
The 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship winner will earn an exemption into the 2013 RBC Canadian Open at the historic Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont.
The 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship resumes Friday, September 7, 2012, with final-round play beginning at 7:30 a.m. (PDT).
