LA Match Play: Brockington prevails

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Aug. 12, 2012) -- UC Davis junior Mike Brockington took home the title at the 2012 Los Angeles City Match Play Championship Sunday, defeating Boris Stanchev, 1-up.
Brockington, of Laguna Niguel, proved that he might be on the verge of a breakout season for the Aggies with a terrific run through the match play bracket.
After earning the No. 3 seed after stroke-play qualifying, Brockington dispatched of Darren Saqui (5-and-4), Kevin Cullen (1-up) and Wally Gonzalez (3-and-2) before squaring off against Stanchev, the No. 5 seed from Long Beach.
Play began Aug. 4 with one qualifying round at Encino Municipal Golf Course. Match play began the following day with Rounds 1 and 2 played last Sunday at Wilson Municipal and Harding Municipal. On Saturday, the quarterfinals and semifinals were played at Rancho Park ahead of Sunday's championship match at the same location.
