Porter Cup: Werenski maintains lead

LEWISTON, N.Y. (July 20, 2012) –- Richy Werenski maintained his four-shot lead in the Porter Cup, touring Niagara Falls Country Club for a third consecutive bogey-free round to post a 3-under 67 Friday.
Werenski, a Georgia Tech junior from South Hadley, Mass., enters Saturday's final round at 15-under 195. He leads Justin Thomas (67), an Alabama sophomore from Goshen, Ky., by four strokes. Thomas birdied his first four holes to pull even with Werenski but struggled over his next 13 holes before making birdie at the par-3 18th.
First-round leader Denny McCarthy (67), a Virginia sophomore from Rockville, Md., is tied with Scott Harvey (64), the reigning Carolinas Mid-Amateur champion from Greensboro, N.C., in third place at 10-under 200.
Defending champion Patrick Rodgers (69), a Stanford sophomore from Avon, Ind., is tied for fifth at 201 with Florida senior Tyler McCumber of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Australian Cameron Smith (63), who shot the low round of the day.

Porter Cup
One of the premier amateur events in the
nation, this 72-hole stroke play invitational has
lots of extra activities that give this event a special
flavor. The winning player receives a green blazer, as
well as an invitation to the Master of the Amateurs
tournament in Melbourne, Australia. Pre-tournament
qualifying is a few weeks prior to the
event and approximately five spots are available.
Starting in 2023, the men's and women's
Porter Cup championships are run concurrently with
54 players in each field and alternating
tee times. It's been exciting seeing the top players in each division in final pairings on the par-3 18th hole at Niagara Falls CC, with large galleries always appreciative of the rising talent.
