Albin Choi
RICHMOND HILL, Canada (July 13, 2012) - Toronto's Albin Choi carded his second consecutive 69 to pull four shots ahead of the field at the Investors Group Ontario Amateur championship hosted by Summit Golf and Country Club in Richmond Hill. The former Canadian Amateur champion (2010) laid down six birdies but wasn't exempt from the challenge posed by Summit's notoriously difficult greens, carding a pair of bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes and a double bogey on the 7th. He is the only competitor in the tournament that has managed to card three consecutive rounds under par, setting himself up for a wire-to-wire victory if he continues his solid play through the final eighteen holes on Friday. Two Kent State University men's golf team members are tied for second place; reigning Canadian Amateur champion Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, and 2010 Ontario Amateur champion Corey Conners of Listowel. Both golfers played up and down rounds on Thursday, with Hughes carding a 72 and Conners delivering a 71 highlighted by two eagles on the 5th and 14th holes. The pair will tee up the final round with a four shot deficit at 209, four-under par. Mississauga's Russell Bowie is six strokes off the pace at two-under after delivering his second straight under par performance with a 70. The Brampton Golf Club member is one stroke ahead of Toronto's Daniel Kim who sits in fifth place, followed by 2008 champion David Bunker of Woodbridge who is tied for sixth place alongside Mississauga'sGraham Baillargeon. Barrie's Daley Byles made a run up the leaderboard into seventh place from tied for 30th after carding the day's best performance, a 68. The final round of the Investors Group Ontario Amateur Championship gets under way at 7:30 am on Friday, with the 2012 champion set to be crowned in the afternoon. The lead group of Choi, Hughes and Conners will tee off at 11:10 am, and the gates at Summit will be open for spectators to take in the final round action.
