Merced County: Schrier defends, Adolph wins
MERCED, Calif. (July 8, 2012) -- After a nail bitter last year that took a 4-hole playoff to determine the winner, Teddy Schrier, last year's eventual winner had an easier time this year. Schrier captured the Merced County Championship played at Merced Golf & Country Club by a decisive 4-stroke margin of victory.
Schrier went wire-to wire in the defense of his title. After an opening round 69 he shared the lead with Sam Smith. The pair were the only players in the field to break par and they held a three stroke lead over a foursome at 72.
Schrier followed up with a second round 69 and tournament total of 6-under-par 138 to finish up four strokes ahead of Rick Gilkey 142 (74-68) and Sam Smith 142 (69-73) who finished up tied for second.
A foursome finished up tied for fourth at 144. They included Andre Navarro (72-72) Jeff Hoffman (72-72) Jeffrey Cornez (72-72) and Rufie Fessler (73-71.)
Rob Adolph took the senior flight with a 143 (68-75) one ahead of Jim Knoll 144 (69-75.) Conrad Nilmeier took third with a 145 (69-76.)
Tom Palumbo captured the member flight with a 158 (80-78) by five strokes over Isaac Isakaw who had 163 (85-78.)
