Brentwood, California (March 12, 2005) -- While many players stumbled through some extremely 'healthy' fescue grass looking for their drives, Garett Wagner chose to leave his driver in the bag today in the opening round of the inaugural amateurgolf.com Diablo Valley Amateur at Shadow Lakes.
He wound up with the early lead as a result.
Wagner, a reinstated amateur, relied on his experience and his ability to hit fairways and greens in his 4 birdie, 1 bogey round at the Gary Roger Baird-designed Shadow Lakes Golf Club. His only bogey -- on a day he only used driver 5 times -- was the result of a long three putt at the 8th (his 17th hole). He came back with a solid birdie on the long par-4 ninth, where a huge drive to well inside of the 150 marker was followed up with a wedge that landed behind the hole and spun back to 4 feet.
1997 Alameda Commuters Champion Jeff Burda of Modesto stands alone in second place after a fine round of 70, while Matt Couch is another stroke back after a 71.
Dave Stone leads the Senior Division after a 2-under-par 69 which may have been a bit more explosive in nature than Wagner's day. Stone made 7 birdies on the round and takes some serious momentum into tomorrow's final round -- he birdied 4 of his last 5 holes today...
Cameron Farah takes a 5 stroke lead into the final round in the Net Division. Farah's round was sparked by a holed-out wedge for eagle at the uphill par-4 12th hole, but it took him a moment to figure out where his ball was after reaching the top of the hill, where the slope blocks the players view of the green's surface.
"I first looked over the green," explained Farah after the round. "But then my playing partner, Alan Parker, spotted a ball mark right in front of the hole and he checked and found the ball in there. So that was nice."
Players will tee off 1/2 hour earlier tomorrow, with the first groups teeing off 1 and 10 at 7:00am. Note: Follow the link to the tournament at the top of the story and then click 'results' to see top 10 leaders in each division.
