Haydn Porteous defends at Boland Amateur Open
Haydn Porteous
WORCHESTER, South Africa (May 2, 2012) -- South Africa's second ranked amateur, Haydn Porteous showed why he was the top ranked amateur in the Boland Open when he over came a 3 shot deficit and wind speeds gusting in excess of 50km/h to win the Boland Open Championship as defending champion.
Gerlou Roux who had the lead at the start of the days play but the first hole already resulted in a two shot swing when Gerlou started with a bogey to Haydn's birdie and the lead was down to one. From that point on, the players slugged it out until the 5th hole where Haydn changed a gear and reeled off 5 birdies over the next 14 holes without a bogey to win the Championship by 4 shots.
Once again, in winds which made the playing of the game almost impossible, only two players managed to better par over the final round with Haydn scoring 69 and Mark Mahoney scoring a 71.
Boland's leading player and top ranked player on the local OOM, Drikus Bruyns finished the tournament on level par two shots ahead of Jacquin Hess and Dylan Raubenheimer.
