Match play begins at Western Province Amateur
CAPETOWN, S. Africa (April 26, 2012) -- Bizarre weather marred the first day of the WP Amateur as play was twice delayed by lightning but eventually play was completed. Stroke-play winner Justin Turner survived the usual post win hangover as he edged Loius Taylor on the 19th before taking out Gauteng North journeyman Rae Mackie.
James du Preez who impressed in the stroke play went out in the second round to Free Stater PJ de Villiers although he almost escaped as De Villiers dumped his approach into the water on the 18th before saving his blushes with a 30 foot putt.
Of the other matches, pre tournament favourite Brandon Stone had two comfortable victories while young WP star Dylan Raubenheimer did likewise.
Breyton Meyer was agin impressive as he birdied 15, 16 and 17 to close out a game Louis Claassen.
Two Bellville members Gerlou Roux and Charl du Preez also made the quarters.
Interestingly enough there are three WP players in the top half as they all attempt to become the first WP player to reach the finals since Justin Turner won it in 2008.
