Calef leads Texas North Mid-Am
Irving, TX – (March 24, 2012) -- An unseasonably warm day greeted the players for the second round of the North Mid-Amateur Championship. With another sun-filled day of near perfect scoring conditions, one player was able to distance himself from the field as the rest of the leaders failed to take advantage and only three players managed under par rounds.

Mike Calef finds himself atop the leaderboard heading into the final round in just his second TGA championship. Calef recently moved to Allen from the Boston area, and is wasting little time making his presence felt. Calef is no stranger to the spotlight, having won the 2011 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur. Mike Calef was the only player to post two under par rounds and sits at four under par for the two days.

Aaron Hickman, Rob Couture, Bill Steen, and Colby Harwell are all in a tie for second place and will try to chase down the leader on Sunday. Hickman, the defending champion, fired a three over par round of 74 to leave him at even par. Rob Couture, who is looking for his fifth victory in this championship, also struggled on day two with a four over par 75. Bill Steen of Dallas had four costly bogeys in his round of two over par 73. Colby Harwell shot two solid rounds of 70 and 72 to put himself in contention heading into the final round.

Old American features six sets of tees, ranging from the 5,215-yard forward markers to the 7,174-yard “Leonard” tournament tees. Davis and Leonard conceived the routing and layout with both medal and match play in mind, as golfers are required to hold “steady to par” through a number of holes, but enticed to gamble on birdie or better during select stretches of the course.

The North Mid-Amateur is open to male amateur golfers who are 25 years of age or older by the tournament start date and reside in the North Texas region (north of the 31’ parallel) with an index of 8.4 or less. Entries open on January 30 and close on March 21 or when the field is full. Please reference “TGA Regional Tournament Eligibility” for additional details. The format for the event is 54 hole individual stroke play with no cut. The winner and runner-up will earn an exemption into the 2012 Texas Amateur to be held June 14-17 at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas. The top three finishers will also receive an exemption into the 2012 Texas Mid-Amateur, scheduled from September 20-23 on the Blue Course at Dallas Athletic Club.
