Virginia Women's Team Matches: Match play begins
NEWPORT NEWS, Va., (Oct. 27, 2011) –– The six-golfer Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club team and The Country Club of Virginia each posted victories in the opening round of match play and the top two seeds will meet in Friday’s championship flight final at the 65th Virginia State Golf Association Women’s State Team Matches being conducted at James River Country Club.
Top-seeded Elizabeth Manor, based in Portsmouth, Va., bested three-time defending champion Mount Vernon Country Club by a six-point margin (30-24) as the match play portion of the event got underway on Thursday. Meanwhile, second-seeded The Country Club of Virginia upended Bayville Golf Club by 11 points, 32½-21½.
For Elizabeth Manor, the combinations of Cindy-Morris (Portsmouth) and Kerry Johnson (Chesapeake) as well as Cyndi Carlson (Chesapeake) and Shelley Savage (Arlington) each posted four-point victories (11-7) to help fuel the team to the final.
The Country Club of Virginia, meanwhile, was stoked by victories from the tandems of Natalie Easterly (Charlottesville) and Mary Parsley (Richmond), who posted a nine-point triumph, 13½-4½, while Richmond residents Lindsay Wortham and Margaret McGehee recorded a four-point win (11-7).
Both Elizabeth Manor and The Country Club of Virginia have won the title on multiple occasions. Elizabeth Manor registered three consecutive triumphs from 2002-04 and the team appeared in the final on three occasions (2005-06 and 2010) following their last victory. CCV is a 10-time winner of the event, with their last victory coming in 2007. The central Virginia-based club bested Elizabeth Manor for the title in 2006.
Matches in remaining flights will see Broad Bay Country Club take on Washington Golf and Country Club in the first flight, while Meadowbrook Country Club meets host James River Country Club in flight two. Third flight action features The Williamsburg Club against Fort Belvoir Golf Club.

ABOUT THE
VSGA Women's State Team
Each club will enter three two-woman sides each
day. Each side of two will play an 18-hole qualifying
round in a four-ball stroke play format. The clubs
with the four lowest aggregate scores will be placed
in the Championship Flight. All other clubs will be
flighted by team handicap and seeded by aggregate
qualifying score. Team winners for each flight will
be
determined by two days of four-ball matches (one
point per hole). Any VSGA Member Club or
Association may enter a team of six female golfers
who have belonged to that Club or Association since
June 1 of the current year.
