Quarterfinals set at the Connecticut Junior
WATERTOWN, CONN. (July 12, 2011) – Eight players advanced to the quarterfinals of the 70th Connecticut Junior Amateur at Watertown Golf Club. Players had to deal with temperatures in the high nineties over two rounds of match play to advance.
Both the top and bottom of the bracket have seen upsets but stroke play medalist Nick Hedden from Clinton Country Club is still alive. Hedden needed all eighteen holes to earn his quarterfinal berth defeating Chris Bennett from Madison Country Club one up. Hedden will face Paul Pastore from eClub of Fairfield County at 8:00am tomorrow morning.
Number five seed Cameron Mackay from Redding Country Club advanced to his first quarterfinals. Mackay failed to win his opening match in last year’s Junior Amateur but that fact did not bother him and he moves on to play Brian Butler from Wampanoag Country Club, the number thirteen seed.
John Flaherty from Glastonbury Hills Country Club made it to the Round of 16 last year and has done at least one better this year. His impressive 7 & 5 victory in the Round of 16 advances him to meet Matt Schimenti from Silver Spring Country Club in the quarterfinals.
The highest remaining seed is Clark Robinson from Topstone Golf Club. Robinson, the eighteen seed, has yet to make it to the sixteenth hole in his matches winning 6 & 4 and 4 & 3 in his Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches respectively. Robinson will face Jack Zierolf from Brooklawn Country Club.
Quaterfinal matches will begin tomorrow Wednesday, July 13th at 8:00am with the two semi-final matches to follow.
