South Carolina Amateur Match Play: Joye meets Goins in the Finals

Spartanburg, S.C. – With a come-from-behind victory in his semifinal match, USC Upstate rising sophomore Adam Goins (Gaffney, S.C.) will have a chance to claim the 39th S.C. Amateur Championship when he tees off in the championship match on Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. at The Carolina Country Club.
In his semifinal match, Goins trailed Steve Liebler after 14 holes, but momentum shifted toward the Spartan golfer after a 45 minute weather delay. Goins birdied the 15th and 16th holes to take a 1-up lead with two holes to play. On the 18th hole, Liebler sank an eagle putt square the match. Goins won the match on the 19th hole to advance to Sunday's championship.
Nelson Dickson's (Spartanburg, S.C.) bid for a championship ended on Saturday evening when he fell to Wofford's Mark Joye 3 & 2. Dickson was in line to advance to Sunday's final, but Joye's late surge in which he won the 12th, 13th, 14th and 16th holes spelled the end for Dickson.
Quarterfinal Recap:
Goins played in the lower bracket and faced off against Charleston's Alex Ellis. He claimed a 1 up victory over Ellis to advance to the semifinals. Meanwhile, Dickson played in the upper bracket and battled Kershaw's Cary Phillips. Dickson closed out the match on the 17th hole, taking the 3&1 win to advance to the semifinals.

Championship format is 36 holes of stroke play to
determine 32 qualifiers for
match play. The defending champion is seeded
number one
for match play if otherwise eligible.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has
reached his 13th birthday, is a legal resident of
South Carolina, is a member in good
standing of a club which is a member of the
Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at
a CGA member club that
does not exceed 7.4.
