Sun Country (SCAGA) Match Play and Senior Match Play Championship: Condon and Sanchez Prevail
SANDIA PEAK, NM (June 4, 2011) -- In any Match Play Championship, half of the battle is managing your thoughts and emotions through multiple rounds of competition. During the trophy presentation of the 2011 SCAGA Match Play Championships Greg Condon and Lee Sanchez both stressed how difficult cramming so many rounds into a short period can be.
In the regular bracket, Condon faced UNM Lobo Sam Saunders and the match was rather one sided. After leading the field in birdies and eagles all week, Saunders game left him in the final round. "Condon will par you to death," said Mark Swanson, Senior Rules and Competitions Director. "He is just going to make you win it from him."
Condon carded twelve pars, one birdie and one bogey in the match to win 7 & 5. "It was a shame to see Sam play the way he did, I played in his group earlier in the week and if that Sam Saunders would have showed up the outcome could have been much different," said Condon.
In the Senior Match Play bracket, Lee Sanchez, a Paa-Ko Ridge employee, took down Nick Silva of Socorro, N.M. Silva had won seven consecutive matches going into the finals today due to his victory in last year's Senior Match Play Championship. Sanchez jumped out to an early lead on the front nine with a 4 up lead at the turn an closed the match out after a solid par on 14.
