St. Thomas, Ont. (Sept 3, 2010) – Paul Simson of Raleigh, NC maintained his lead and claimed the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship title at St. Thomas Golf and Country Club, finishing with an impressive 15-stroke margin of victory.

Simson was the only competitor in the field to shoot a final score under par.

“I played a really solid round today,” said Simson, who carded two birdies on the front nine, three birdies and three bogeys on the back nine to finish with 2-under par 70.

“I got so far ahead so I tried to do some crazy stuff. I tried to go for the green on 15 and that wasn’t a good move. I just wanted to try it once because when will I get to again. I hit two good shots on 16 and made a bogey and a bad chip on 17 for a bogey. It was nice to make that 35-footer on the last hole to birdie and finish out with a good move. I always enjoy playing with Graham, he’s a gentleman and a great player.”

Coming up next for Simson is the Carolina Senior Championship next week featuring seniors from both North and South Carolina. After that, he competes in the State Team Championship, the North Carolina Mid-Amateur and the US Senior Amateur.

It was a battle for runner-up honours, as four time champion Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que., and Ian Harris of Bloomfield, MI went head-to-head at 8-over par for most of the back nine. However, Cooke pulled through to finish with a final-day round score of 5-over par 77 (72-74-73-77—296). Harris who was tied for fifth place at the end of the third round yesterday shot a 2-over par 74 (77-75-71-74—297) to land him in the final top three.

The Canadian Men’s Senior Champion earns an exemption into the USGA Senior Championship at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club, October 2-7, in Orlando, FL. Simson earned an exemption earlier this year when he also won the British Senior Amateur.
