Inside the Gator Nation: A Morning Tour of the University of Florida Golf FacilitiesOn a crisp January morning at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Florida, Pete Wlodkowski of AmateurGolf.com had the opportunity to step inside the world of the University of Florida Gators Men's Golf team.
Accompanied by head coach J.C. Deacon—a former top collegiate and amateur player who starred at UNLV and even reached the semi-finals of the U.S. Amateur before his professional journey on the Canadian Tour—the tour revealed not only state-of-the-art training facilities but also the heart and soul behind the team’s recent success, including their historic 2023 NCAA Division I title, the program’s first national championship in 22 years.
“A lot of passion is built into every corner of this facility, and it shows in how our players approach the game every day,” said Coach Deacon as he led the tour.
His enthusiasm was contagious, as he pointed out that every detail—from the indoor hitting and putting bays to the meticulously maintained practice tee with well-defined targets—was designed to help the Gators excel. Not far from the main course, a dedicated building houses cutting-edge training aids and launch monitor technology that provides players with real-time analysis of their swings, ensuring that every practice session is as productive as it is intense.

A Glimpse Into the Daily Grind
As Pete wandered through the facility, the first sights were those of early-morning routines unfolding on the course. Among the dedicated group warming up were standout players like Matthew Kress, Ian Gilligan, and Jack Turner.
Pete noted that while Matthew Kress was still shaking off the frustration from a tough qualifying round—a few extra putts can make all the difference—the energy and focus of the team were undeniable. In particular, Ian Gilligan, fresh off his holiday triumph in Australia where he claimed the prestigious Australian Master of the Amateurs title, was in top form. Gilligan is currently ranked No. 5 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings.
A transfer from Long Beach just a year and a half ago, Gilligan has quickly become an essential part of the squad. Meanwhile, sophomore Jack Turner, remembered by Coach Deacon as a “freshman All-American who came out of nowhere,” had matured into one of the best players on the team, driven by a work ethic that the coach described as infectious.
Deacon shared, “I always knew the moment I saw Jack swing a club that I wanted him to be a Gator. His dedication and constant drive to improve truly set him apart.”
The passion and commitment of these young athletes are supported by an environment that feels like a second home—one where every detail is engineered to bring out the best in them.
World-Class Facilities and Cutting-Edge Technology
The tour didn't stop on the fairway. Pete was introduced to the comprehensive practice areas where the university spares no expense in preparing its student-athletes. The facility boasts a dedicated indoor space complete with hitting and putting bays, ideal for practicing even when the weather shifts.
Outside, expansive putting greens and a wedge range stretching up to 125 yards provide ample space for honing short game precision. One of the practice tees features impressive targets for full shots, ensuring that every swing has a purpose.
Emphasizing the importance of technology, Coach Deacon highlighted that the team relies on advanced launch monitors and computer analysis to fine-tune every aspect of their game. This commitment to precision echoes the ethos of the program, where each practice session is a calculated step toward improvement.
Among the supportive staff, assistant coach Dudley Hart—an alumnus of the program with 30 years of PGA Tour experience—brings a wealth of knowledge that further elevates the team. His seasoned insight, having once played for the program in the late 1990s, bridges the gap between past glories and the present commitment to excellence.
A Tradition of Excellence and Future Ambitions
The facilities are a visual testament to the long-standing tradition and renewed ambition at the University of Florida. Coach Deacon, whose leadership has been pivotal in achieving major milestones like the NCAA Division I title in Arizona, exudes confidence as he points to every aspect of the training center.
He noted how the revamped practice areas—such as a newly leveled old tree that now provides more chipping options—offer unique challenges to perfect bump-and-run shots and false front approaches.
“We’re excited about the depth of talent on our roster as we head into the 2025 spring season,” Deacon remarked. “With the combination of top-notch facilities, advanced training technology, and a team that’s willing to put in the work early in the morning, our goals remain unchanged—we’re here to win the SEC Championship every year and battle through match play at the NCAA Championship.”
As the morning unfolded, Pete captured glimpses of camaraderie and persistence: players discussing swing adjustments, coaches fine-tuning drills with analytical feedback, and the ever-present buzz of determination that fills this corner of the University of Florida.
For 18-to-22-year-old athletes striving to reach their potential, this is more than just a golf facility. It is a launchpad for career-defining moments—where tradition meets modern technology, and every shot is a testament to hard work and dedication.
As the Gators prepare for another competitive season, their facilities serve not only as a training ground but as a beacon of pride and ambition that inspires every player to reach new heights.
In the end, the tour with Coach J.C. Deacon and his staff was a window into a world where excellence isn’t just a goal—it’s a way of life. And as the Florida Gators gear up for future victories, one thing is clear: here at the Mark Bostick Golf Course, passion, precision, and perseverance are in full swing.
