Jordan Utley birdies three of his last four holes to win Virginia Mid-Amateur

Standing on the No. 15 tee, Jordan Utley's comfortable lead at the Virginia Mid-Amateur at the Country Club of Petersburg in Petersburg, Va., was starting to get uncomfortable.
Scott Shingler birdied holes No. 12, 13, and 14 to get to 7-under, just two shots back of Utley and playing his best golf of the week.
However, Utley stepped up and made birdies on holes No. 15, 17, and 18 to get to 12-under and defeat Shingler by two shots. He needed those birdies since Shingler birdies holes No. 15, 17, and 18 as well to shoot a 30 on the closing nine holes.
With the 2021 and 2022 champion Evan Beck and 2023 Mikey Moyers not in the field this year, it was anyone's tournament for the taking, and Utley was the one able to capitalize, carding rounds of 70-68-66 with 14 birdies and just two bogeys on for the 54 holes.
Utley has finished runner-up twice in the VSGA Mid-Amateur, and this is his first VSGA title.
Shingler finished in solo second place at 10-under, and Joey Jordan, Michael Redwood, and John Rosenstock finished T3 at 7-under to round out the top five.
Parker Wingfield finished in solo sixth place at 6-under, and Kyle Bailey and Ian Hildebrand finished T7 at 5-under.
The Mid-Amateur consisted of three rounds of stroke-play qualifying, with the field being cut to the low 50 percent and ties for Sunday's third and final round.
Utley's victory gives him a three-year exemption into both the VSGA Amateur Championship and State Open of Virginia. He will now head to Kinloch Golf Club in his home state for the U.S. Mid-Amateur in two weeks.
