For the first time in the event history, the North & South Amateur at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C., will run the men's and women's championships concurrently. And it is happening two weeks after Pinehurst No. 2 hosted the best players in the world for the 124th U.S. Open.
Jackson Van Paris, a Pinehurst local, is back in the field this year after earning medalist honors and shooting a course-record 9-under 61 on No. 4 in the first round last year. Van Paris also won the 2023 Sunnehanna Amateur, so he is experienced in the Elite Amateur Golf Series events.
Nick Dunlap defeated Karl Vilips last year to win the 2023 North & South Men's Amateur, giving him his second win in two weeks after he won the Northeast Invitational. In the Women's championship, Anna Morgan won after finishing runner-up in 2022.
Van Paris is currently ranked No. 26 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings. Other notables in the men's field is Ben Warian, the 2024 Sunnehanna Amateur champion, and Anthony Delisanti, the 2024 Northeast Invitational champion.
This year, as part of the new Women's Elite Amateur Golf Series, the North & South Women's Amateur will be running alongside the men's championship. Normally, the women's championship is a week or two later in the summer.
“One of the big things that we want to achieve out of this is a better schedule. There are multiple elite women's events that are on top of each other on the calendar,” Andy Priest said when the announcement of the Women's Elite Amateur Golf Series went out. “We want to try and help incentivize them to work this out to where those conflicts don't exist. That's the one thing that we would like to see on the men's side mirror on the women's side, so these elite events are not competing against each other."
Nine of the last 12 North & South Women’s Amateur champions have drawn paychecks as members of the LPGA Tour. The equation is near perfect. Win the North & South Am, and go on to professional success at the highest level.
The North & South women's champions are among the game's legends: Babe Zaharias, Louise Suggs, Peggy Kirk Bell, Hollis Stacey, Brandie Burton, Brittany Lang, Morgan Pressel, and Yani Tseng.
“Since day one, our goal has been to align the top competitive amateur events in the United States, not only for the men’s game but for the women’s game as well,” Andy Priest said. "We are excited to play a leading role in elevating elite women’s golf by providing these athletes with an aligned summer schedule of competition at some of the most renowned venues in the country conducted by historic organizations and world-class resorts.”
Currently, Kendall Turner leads the Women's Elite Amateur Golf Series through two events, finishing T13 at the Sea Island Women's Amateur and T2 at the Southwestern. Annabelle Pancake and Leigh Chien are tied for second place.
Turner, Chien, and Pancake are not in the field this week.
