Moot Thomas Invitational: Thomas Lowe leads after round one

After one round of the Moot Thomas Invitational,
Thomas Lowe of Ocala, Fla., holds a narrow lead over the field and the 2023 defending champion. Lowe finished T10 in the 2023 Moot Thomas Invitational.
Taking place at the Ocala Golf Club in Ocala, Fla., Lowe shot a scorching first-round 7-under 65 to lead the Senior Division by three shots. Daniel Owen of Ocala, Fla., and Kevin VandenBerg of Naples, Fla., are T2 after rounds of 4-under 68.
VandenBerg is the highest-ranked player in the field, currently ranked No. 3 in the AmateurGolf.com Senior Rankings. Owen won the 2023 Moot Thomas Invitational.

Jerry Slagle of Southlake, Tex., is in solo fourth place at 3-under, and Matthew Avril of Vero Beach, Fla., and Chad Ibbotson of Sanford, Fla., are T5 at 2-under.
In the Super Senior Division, Brad Rollinson of Ponte Vedra, Fla., leads by one shot over Marcus Beck of Tallahassee, Fla., after a first-round 4-under 68. Beck is currently ranked No. 8 in the AmateurGolf Super Senior Rankings.
In the Legends Division, John Armstrong of Frostburg, Md., and Jim Prendergast of Limerick, Pa., are tied for the lead after rounds of 4-under 68. In the Super Legends Division, Bill Engel shot a 5-under 67 to lead by one shot over Pete McDade of Lakeland, Fla., and John Osborne of Vero Beach, Fla.

As a 19-year-old private in the Air Force, on his way to Korea, he stopped in San Francisco long enough to take Gene Littler to the 18th hole of the California State Amateur Semi-Finals. He also won The All-Air Force Tournament, the Reno Amateur, and the Cal/Nevada Invitational.
In senior golf, he won the Pinehurst North-South Senior, the Florida Super Senior, and the Florida Senior 4-Ball and was the second oldest player to qualify for a USGA event. In 2009, he was inducted into the Florida State Golf Association Hall of Fame.
The tournament is played at Ocala Golf Club, the Ocala municipal course on which Moot learned the game.

Legends division must be 70 years or older, and
Super Legends must be 75 years or older. The
tournament honors Moot Thomas, an Ocala native

FSGA Hall of Famer who had a lengthy and
successful
amateur career.
