Watersound Invitational: Defending champions Vanderbilt leads after round one

Vanderbilt is a team that is looking to hoist the NCAA championship trophy in May, and they looked the part in the first round at the Watersound Invitational at Sharks Tooth Golf Club in Panama City Beach, Fla.
Vanderbilt shot a team round of 10-under 278 to lead the team competition by five shots. Clemson and Mississippi State are T2 at 5-under, Notre Dame is in solo fourth place at 4-under, and Virginia is in solo fifth place at 2-under. Vanderbilt won the team title in 2023.
Vanderbilt has four golfers currently in the top ten, led by Gordon Sargent. Sargent is the No. 1 ranked golfer in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings. Sargent is T3 at 4-under, Jackson Van Paris and Wells Williams are T5 at 3-under, and Matthew Riedel is T9 at 2-under.
Sargent has had a storied amateur golf career thus far and was the low amateur at the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club.

Neal Shipley of Ohio State, the 2023 U.S. Amateur runner-up, and Jonathan Nielson of Clemson join Van Paris and Williams at 3-under and T5.
Six golfers are 2-under and T9, including Palmer Jackson of Notre Dame, who won the 2022 Jones Cup.
