Q-School Second Stage: Dawson Armstong, Kevin Velo take solo leads

With half of the holes complete, the leaderboards of the final two sites of the PGA Tour's Q-School Second Stage are starting to take shape.
At the California site at Valencia Country Club in Valencia, Calif., Kevin Velo of Danville, Calif., shot a 3-under 69 to take the solo lead. Velo was tied for the lead with Isaiah Salinda of Las Vegas, Nev., and Jeffrey Kang of Los Angeles, Calif., after round one after the trio shot an opening round of 6-under 66.
Velo recorded five birdies and two bogeys in the round.
Jared Du Toit of Kimberley, Canada, shot up the leaderboard from T8 to T2 after a round of 5-under 67. Du Toit recorded four birdies in his first six holes to start strong. Du Toit is tied with Kang at T2 at 7-under and are two shots back of Velo.
Paul Imondi of Rancho Santa Maragarita, Calif., also shot a 5-under 67 to propel up to T4 and is tied with the third first-round leader Salinda. Alex Chiarella of San Diego, Calif., is in solo sixth place at 5-under.
The top 13 and ties will advance to the Final Stage from December 14 to 17.
The final qualifying site is at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga., and Dawson Armstong of Jacksonville, Fla., holds a two-shot lead over the field at 9-under. The former Lipscomb standout shot a 4-under 68, recorded four birdies in his first six holes to jump into the lead, and played the rest of his round at even-par to stay in the lead. He recorded six birdies and two bogeys total.
Aldrich Potgieter of South Africa held the first-round lead and is now in solo second place at 8-under, and James Nicholas of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., is in solo third place at 7-under.
The top 12 and ties will advance to the Final Stage from December 14 to 17.
