With the fast start that the California Golden Bears got off to in rounds one and two, round three was fairly stress-free en route to winning the Alister Mackenzie Invitational for a program record thirteenth time.
The Invitational is played at Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif., and the Bears were the 2022 champions as well.
The Bears got off to a hot start, shooting a first-round team score of 22-under 262 to lead by eight shots. They were even better in the second round, shooting a 24-under 260 and taking a blistering 19-stroke lead into the final round.
A 5-under 279 in the final round was good enough to secure the 15-shot win.
New Mexico finished in solo second place at 36-under, and San Jose State finished in solo third place at 33-under.
The Lobos shot 9-under in the final round to finish at 36-under, earning runner-up honors behind host California. New Mexico’s 36-under total was the second-lowest in program history, only bettered by the 42-under New Mexico shot at last year’s NCAA Salem Regional.
The three lowest 54-hole totals in New Mexico history have now come in their last seven events, dating back to last year’s Mountain West Championship, when they shot 35-under.
It's the second event win of the fall season for the Bears, who teamed up with the Cal women on Sept. 28 to defeat Stanford in the annual Big Match.
In the individual competition,
Bastien Amat of New Mexico and
Treed Huang of UC Davis shared the individual title at 16-under.
Amat shot a season-best 7-under 64 in the final round to finish the event at 16-under, tying for the individual title. His total of 197 with rounds of 68-65-64 was the second-lowest 54-hole total in New Mexico history and the best in over 50 years, eclipsed only by Joe McDermott’s 194 total as the 1965 Sun Devil Invitational.
Huang becomes the third freshman in UC Davis history to capture an individual win.
Nathan Wang led California to its team victory, finishing in solo third place at 15-under.
Matthew Sutherland of Fresno State and
Kristian Bressum of St. Mary's finished in T4 at 14-under.
