Texas Tech's Ludvig Aberg firmly took control of the Big 12 Championships on Tuesday by firing a third-round 63 at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
At 14-under 196 through 54 holes, the world's top-ranked amateur will take a comforable seven-stroke lead over Oklahoma State's Jonas Baumgartner into Wednesday's final round of stroke play.
Aberg, who began the day two strokes off the lead, birdied holes 3, 6 and 7 to make the turn at 3-under and added four more birdies on the backside for a bogey-free 63, which established a Texas Tech school record at a Big 12 Conference Championship and tied the conference championship record set by Gran Hirschman of Oklahoma in 2016.
On the strength of Aberg's record-setting round, Texas Tech jumped into second place in the team standings at 9-over 849, 11 shots back of first-place Oklahoma which sits at 2-under.
The Sooners, ranked 11th by Golfweek/Sagarin, will look to lock down its second consecutive Big 12 title tomorrow, a feat which has not been accomplished by a Sooner team since 1956-57., quite
Oklahoma is the only team in red numbers through three rounds, quite the accomplsihment given the windy, cold and wet conditions at Prairie Dunes.
Three-time All-American Patrick Welch carded an even-par 70 on Tuesday to grab a share of third at 2-under 208 while Drew Goodman sits in fifth place at 1-under 209. Freshman Jase Summy (6th) and Ben Lorenz (t-8th) also hold spots in the top-10.
Oklahoma and Texas Tech will be paired together for Wednesday's final round.
