Rarely does the quality of a field of PGA Tour players go
up from Sunday to Monday, but such was the case at Seminole Golf Club, where 12 of the top 20 players in the world teamed up with amateur partners in the Seminole Pro-Member on Monday.
Once dubbed "
the first major of the year" by Davis Love III, Monday's event had a stronger field than the PGA Tour Honda Classic that wrapped up the day before. The winner there, Chris Kirk, probably didn't celebrate late into the night because he was first off at Seminole at 7:25am.
Mike Walrath, Chairman and CEO of the software company Yext, teamed up with Justin Thomas to win the gross competition with a 9-under 63. They finished one shot ahead of Jim Davis and Brendan Todd.
Four teams, including the father-son team of Gerry and Rory McIlroy, as well as Shinnecock Hills club champion David Novak and world #1 Jon Rahm, finished tied for third at 6-under 66.
Davis and Todd were the net champions with a 12-under 60, three shots ahead of Team McIlroy and three other teams.
This year's amateur field was as diverse and impressive as the pros, with several USGA champions, competitive ams and seniors, leaders in business and athletes like the recently retired Tom Brady playing on a beautiful day in south Florida.
Brady and partner Tony Finau played in the same group as Rahm and Novak and got a top-20 finish, as well as a T-9 net finish out of 94 teams.
Last year's winners Mark Flaherty and Patrick Cantlay finished T-18 with a 69.
Seminole has long been a favorite of practically everyone in both pro and amateur circles, going all the way back to Ben Hogan, who frequently visited the club to prepare for the Masters, saying, “It’s the only course I could be perfectly happy playing every single day. If you can play well at Seminole, you can play well anywhere.”
