Juan Martín Loureiro and María Olivero win Argentine Stroke Play
Juan Martín Loureiro and María Olivero (Argentinian Golf Association)
A spectacular week at the CCG Las Praderas de Luján culminated in Juan Martín Loureiro defending his title while María Olivero won her tenth championship -- a record that seems unlikely to be broken.
María Olivero finished with a 5-under par total and finished as the only woman under par for the event. Iara Martín ended up six shots behind the legendary Olivero for a second-place finish.
Olivero's win marks an incredible feat. Not only has she won 10 titles, but she has also won Argentine Stroke Play Championship in each of the last four different decades. Her first win came in 1996, and her most recent was 2012.
In the men's championship, Juan Martín Loureiro retained his title. He did it in a similar style his 2021 triumph. He played from behind and made up ground with birdies on hole Nos. 3, 6, 8, 14, 17. That run of birdies gave Loureiro some breathing room, which he needed after a double bogey on the 12th and bogey on the 16th. Loureiro finished with a 9-under par score, but had to wait for Mexican José Cristóbal Islas and the Argentine Miguel Sancholuz to complete their rounds.
The drama built up as Sancholuz and Islas played the 18th hole. Sancholuz needed a birdie but made a par. Islas stood on the 18th tee tied with Loureiro for the lead. A bogey gave Loureiro the victory.
