Laird and Noel win Nicklaus Invitational at Muirfield Village
Senior champs TJ Brudzinski (left) and Ken Weixel
You don't have to be from the midwest to know that the name Jack Nickalus (and his club Muirfield Village) are synonymous with golf in the Buckeye State.
So the opportunity to compete at Muirfield Village typically brings out Ohio's best Mid-Am and Senior golfers, as well as many players coming into Dublin Ohio just for the occasion.
The tournament's Mid-Amateur division features two rounds of best-ball followed by a final round of combined score -- a grueling format at a difficult course. Today Robbie Laird and Chris Noel of Tulsa, Oklahoma posted a team combined score of 153, and a tournament total of 293 to claim the Nicklaus Invitational Mid-Am title. Their combined score was especially notable given the wave of cool weather moving through the Midwest. Sweaters and vests were in order as the high temperature hovered in the low 50's.
In the Senior Division, TJ Brudzinski (Columbus, Ohio) and partner Ken Weixel (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) shot a team total score of 209 in three rounds of best-ball competition. An impressive final round of 69 secured their victory over Bob Cooper and Stan Humphries of Monroe, Louisiana. Cooper and Humphries posted the low round of the tournament's senior division the first day (a 66) but came back to the field with a 76 in round two.
